The team behind cctvfinder

What we care about.

We have seen it too often: someone spends a great deal of money on a system and a year later stands in front of a recording you cannot make anything out on. That is the reason the cctvfinder exists.

What we know comes from work on real sites: planning systems, assessing systems, reading standards and measuring whether the data sheets hold what they promise. Not from a catalogue.

The technical grounding for it comes from decades of expert assessment work in video security. The experience from more than a hundred systems assessed went into what the cctvfinder calculates today.

Who is behind it

A small office in Bavaria.

cctvfinder is run by Becherer Technologies in Aichach, Germany, in technical collaboration with CCTV Check. The tool grew out of the daily work: planning systems, assessing systems, reading data sheets and measuring whether they hold what they promise.

We do not sell cameras. What the cctvfinder suggests is decided by the calculation and not by purchasing — which is exactly why you can point to it.

Grounding

What we stand on.

Every figure the cctvfinder gives you can be checked with a pencil and paper. That matters to us: a figure nobody can check is in the end just a claim.

  • DIN EN 62676-4. The standard for video surveillance systems translates a task into a number: 12.5 px/m for Monitor, 25 for Detect, 62.5 for Observe, 125 for Recognise, 250 for Identify and 1000 for Inspect. That is what we calculate to.
  • Pixel density rather than megapixels. What counts is how many pixels fall on one metre at the target. That one quantity pulls resolution, field of view and distance together into a single statement.
  • The figures from the data sheet. We take the field of view as the manufacturer measures it and do not calculate it back from the focal length. With the lenses of real CCTV cameras the two routes are whole factors apart, not decimal places.
  • Across manufacturers. The catalogue holds models from several manufacturers, each with the figures from its data sheet. Which one fits is decided by the calculation and not by purchasing.
